Description of the work

The celebration of the glorious apostle St. James at the battle of Clavijo presented the artist with a new challenge in representing two elements in the composition, the man and the animal. Elegantly resolved, the figure of the saint carries the flag with the cross in his left arm, holding out his right hand to the viewer. The richly-textured stew shows the artist's skill in the use of traditional imagery techniques, which lends the work a sense of elegance.
