Saint Mark the Evangelist: The Power of the Word Transformed into Sculpture
The figure of Saint Mark the Evangelist has held a prominent place in Christian iconography since the early centuries of the Church. As the author of the second of the canonical Gospels and closely associated with the preaching of Saint Peter, his image has been depicted throughout art history with attributes that allow him to be immediately recognized among the other evangelists. The sculpture created by Juan Alberto Pérez Rojas for the Sevillian town of El Saucejo is fully rooted in this tradition, offering a contemporary interpretation that combines iconographic fidelity, formal elegance, and spiritual depth.
From a historical perspective, Saint Mark is considered one of the principal transmitters of the Gospel message in the early days of Christianity. Tradition identifies him with John Mark, a collaborator of the apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul, and founder of the Church of Alexandria. His Gospel stands out for its narrative vividness, the immediacy of the account, and the power with which it presents the figure of Christ—aspects that have decisively influenced the development of his iconography over the centuries.
The sculpture depicts the saint in a posture of invocation, holding in his left hand the book that symbolizes the Gospel bearing his name, while his right hand delicately holds a quill. This attribute is one of the essential elements of the iconography of the evangelists, as it identifies them as bearers of the Good News and guardians of the revealed word. The composition conveys a sense of balance and nobility that echoes the classical models of Spanish religious art, where formal beauty is placed at the service of devotion.
One of the most significant aspects of this work is the presence of the lion, an inseparable symbol of Saint Mark. Its origin lies in the visions described by the prophets Ezekiel and Saint John in the Book of Revelation, where four winged beings appear that Christian tradition identified with the four evangelists. Mark was assigned the lion, an animal associated with strength, royalty, and spiritual courage.
In Pérez Rojas’s sculpture, the lion takes on special artistic significance. Far from being a mere decorative element, it plays an active role in the composition and establishes a visual dialogue with the figure of the saint. The careful anatomical and expressive rendering of the animal reinforces the work’s symbolic meaning, underscoring the idea of spiritual strength and the proclamation of the Gospel. This harmonious integration between the main figure and the iconographic attribute constitutes one of the piece’s most notable achievements.
From an artistic perspective, the image reveals a deep understanding of the Andalusian tradition of religious sculpture. The rendering of the drapery, the pursuit of anatomical realism, and the individualized treatment of the face demonstrate a clear intention to imbue the sculpture with humanity and a sense of intimacy. The evangelist’s expression avoids any dramatic excess, focusing instead on a serene, reflective, and contemplative spirituality, in keeping with the work’s devotional purpose.
The meticulously crafted gilding and polychromy also play a fundamental role in the overall aesthetic composition of the work. The rich colors of the garments, together with the delicacy of the skin tones, help to enhance the sculptural volume and strengthen the visual presence of the image. The combination of tones and textures—especially in the stucco work, achieved through the use of chisels that simulate the textures of embroidery—reflects the characteristic craftsmanship of the religious imagery created by Pérez Rojas.
This depiction of Saint Mark the Evangelist is, in short, a significant contribution to the current landscape of religious sculpture in El Saucjeo. The work successfully combines iconographic rigor, technical excellence, and artistic sensitivity, offering an image capable of conveying both the historical significance of the saint and the enduring relevance of his message. Through this creation, Juan Alberto Pérez Rojas reaffirms his commitment to the tradition of sacred imagery, developing a unique artistic language that finds its primary means of expression in beauty, faith, and symbolism.
