Saint Luke the Evangelist
Description of the work
The sculpture of Saint Luke, created by the sculptor and religious artist Juan Alberto Pérez Rojas for the processional float of the Cristo de Vera Cruz in El Coronil, is a work designed to enrich the artistic and catechetical narrative of the float through a visual language that is sober, harmonious, and deeply symbolic. This work is part of the tradition of contemporary sacred sculpture, where ornamentation is understood not merely as a decorative element, but as a vehicle for spiritual and cultural transmission.
Saint Luke occupies a unique place within Christian tradition. As the author of the Third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, the Church has long regarded him as one of the great transmitters of the life and teachings of Christ. His iconography is closely linked to the winged bull or ox, a symbol that forms part of the so-called Tetramorph, a set of representations that identify the four evangelists through symbolic figures derived from the visions of the prophet Ezekiel and the Book of Revelation. The bull associated with Saint Luke symbolizes sacrifice, strength, and devotion, values that are repeatedly reflected in his Gospel account.
The work created for El Coronil draws on this rich iconographic tradition and adapts it to a contemporary sensibility, while remaining faithful to the essence of sacred art. The ensemble stands out for the quality of its modeling, its compositional clarity, and the balance between ornamentation and liturgical functionality.
From an artistic standpoint, the decoration reveals a meticulous attention to volume, proportion, and ornamental rhythm. The surfaces display a meticulous treatment that highlights the sculptor’s technical mastery, demonstrating an ability to blend tradition and modernity within a single work. The richness of the details invites a leisurely contemplation, allowing the viewer to gradually uncover the various meanings embedded within the composition.
Beginning in the 17th century, and especially with the creation of the processional float of Jesús del Gran Poder (Seville) by the sculptor Francisco Antonio Ruiz Gijón, processional floats have incorporated images, reliefs, and ornamental elements to visually convey the tenets of the faith. In this sense, the decoration dedicated to Saint Luke serves not only an aesthetic function but also an educational and spiritual one, reminding us of the importance of the Word of God and of those who transmitted it through the Gospels.
Christian tradition regards the holy evangelist as the patron saint of painters and numerous trades related to the arts, a fact that has ensured his constant presence in churches, workshops, and academies over the centuries. This connection makes the work a tribute both to the saint’s role as an evangelist and to his historical connection with artistic creation.
This work, along with the other three evangelists created for the same processional float in El Coronil, ultimately reflects a commitment to preserving and revitalizing religious artistic heritage through a contemporary creation deeply rooted in tradition. The commission demonstrates how sacred sculpture remains a fully relevant language for expressing the beauty, faith, and cultural identity of Christian communities. Through rigorous execution and carefully studied iconography, the work of Saint Luke becomes a testament to the enduring value of art as an instrument of contemplation, memory, and evangelization.
